Investments in Belgian fintechs have fallen by eighty percent

A study by Sirris and Fintech Belgium shows that investments in Belgian fintechs have fallen sharply this year.

"The drop fits into a global back-and-set of investments in technology by about thirty percent. On a global and European scale, the financial technology sector is still at its best. In Europe, investments in fintechs would hardly fall back. For Belgium, the drop is very large. That's an acceleration of the movement we've also noticed in recent years,” said Jean-Louis Van Houwe, president of Fintech Belgium and CEO and founder of Monizze.

From figures from Sirris and Blackfin that Fintech uses in its analysis, it shows that six Belgian deals were concluded in the first three quarters of this year. The amount invested for 2023 will come to 48.2 million euros in that period. Last year that was 255 million euros for the same period. That's a drop of more than eighty percent.

"That evolution is the cumulative result of declining investments in recent years and a lack of cooperation

Between all stakeholders in our country. I have just returned from the SFA Fintech Festival in Singapore, the largest fair for fintechs in the world. For example, the regulator CSSF or the national investment fund BPI is also present on the stand of the Luxembourg or French colleagues. The French and Luxembourgers do come out together to promote the assets of the sector in their country. We have not yet succeeded in that in Belgium. I also notice that in Asia Brussels is a stronger brand than Belgium or our regions," says Jean-Louis Van Houwe.

The French and Luxembourgers come together out to promote the assets of the sector in their country. We have not yet succeeded in Belgium.

On the stock market, he noted the following trends:

1. Cryptoassets create a lot of liquidity. They under-support international trade through an increased speed of payments at lower costs. In this way they become competitors of institutions such as Swift or Euroclear.

2. Generative Al has a major impact on financial technology.

3. The importance of ESG in finance is growing. For example, in Singapore, a lot of large energy companies were present with solutions around certificates for green energy.
