The State of AI in FS: Meetup & Summer BBQ

Thank you to all the participants, speakers, and companies, especially to Dell Technologies who made this event a great success!!

Hosted on June 20th,  Fintech Belgium and Sailpeak launched the First Belgian AI Barometer. The report offered a comprehensive overview of AI’s integration within the Belgian banking and insurance industries, underscoring the ongoing shift towards digital transformation. By surveying 17 key institutions and conducting in-depth interviews with industry leaders, the report highlights the current landscape and future potential of AI in financial services.

Participants in the barometer were on stage and commented on the results, presented business cases related to the responses, and explained their vision for the evolution of AI usage and AI typology in the financial and insurance sectors.

  • Ronan Carey from Dell Technologies provided a comprehensive overview of how DELL is applying AI across their business. He shared Dell’s 4-pronged strategic framework in response to an increased demand for AI-enabled solutions.

  • Nico Vincent from Sailpeak proudly announced the launch of the first AI Barometer on financial services in Belgium. He discussed the adoption of AI in various companies, specifically focusing on the use cases of generative AI and its applications in banking, insurance, and customer service.

  • Fabrice Deprez from Discai, who took part in the Barometer, delved into the groundbreaking pilot project between Crelan and Discai. He explained how Crelan, in collaboration with Discai is pioneering the use of AI to enhance the detection and prevention of financial crime. Fabrice also emphasised the pressing need for banks to invest in AI technology to improve their transaction filtering processes.

  • Diane Nolan from Intelli-Select and Crispin Searle from Clearstream joined to share their experience partaking in the Barometer. They shared that Intelli-Select transformed collateral management for Clearstream, slashing their operational costs and errors. Intelli-Select also introduced its AI platform Intelli-CORE which has streamlined the process of agreeing on terms for contracts from hours to minutes.

  • Jonathan Neubourg from Belfius reflected on the challenges faced in the industry's first wave of digital transformation and the increasing competition and customer demands. He also emphasised the importance of making AI accessible to everyone, not just those in centralised AI departments, and the need for training to make this a reality.

The event concluded with a dynamic roundtable and Q&A session moderated by Toon Vanagt. Panellists, including Jos Gheerardyn from Yields.io and Anthony Belpaire from BNP Paribas Fortis, engaged in a thrilling discussion about the future of technology and the role of AI in finance.

Attendees left with valuable insights and a greater understanding of the importance of education and specialised training in implementing AI in financial services organisations as Europe is lagging behind in AI adoption compared to Asia and North America due to a lack of education and awareness. The event highlighted the need for collaboration and communication among regulators, governments, banks, insurance companies, academics, and tech companies to drive transformative change in the industry.
